Sylas turned six this month! I don’t know where the time has gone, and I can’t believe that I’m a mom to a six-year-old.
Sylas has had a major growth spurt over the summer – and I think even still. He is officially shopping in the boys section of the store, wearing size xs 4/5. I had to buy him all new pants even after having bought him new ones in the spring. He comes up to my sternum now, I’ll have to measure him sometime soon and see how tall he is. He is starting to get too heavy for me to carry too – which makes me sad.
Sylas is so smart. Kindergarten has been going really well for him. It is amazing to me that he can read and spell already. Granted, the words that he can make are pretty small, but he tries to be ambitious sometimes too. He seriously searched for videos of tornadoes (trnado) on YouTube. They do writing and drawing work in class where they write a short one sentence story and illustrate it. He does very well. His handwriting has some room for improvement, but it is getting much better than last year. Sylas is really into science. He loves storms, insects, marine life – namely squids, octopi, cuttlefish and the like. He also likes to know about germs. He is so inquisitive, always asking how things work and why they do what they do. He tells me he wants to be a marine biologist when he grows up, or a scientist – #proudmama over here. I sometimes wonder if this will be his last year believing in Santa Claus. He has been asking me about Santa a lot. How does Santa come down the chimney when we don’t have one? How do reindeer fly? Why does he live at the North Pole? Magic is usually the answer and he isn’t really buying it. I think this year when he wakes up on Christmas morning he will be too excited to care, but I’m wondering if next year he will find out somehow.
Sylas loves to play with his squid toys, Lego’s, Battle Bots, and stuffed animals. His favorite thing to watch on TV is anything on YouTube. He usually looks up squid video clips, insect wars or storm videos. He likes Ghostbuster cartoons as well as the Home Alone movie recently. He likes to play video games like Mario, Sonic and Pac Man.
Sylas’ best friend at school is a girl named Serena. She is older than him – I think Second Grade, but they ride the bus together and have recess together too. He told me once that he was going to marry her some day – after having promised me the same – and I just had to laugh. Maybe she will be my future daughter-in-law…
Sylas’ diet hasn’t improved a whole lot since last year. He still loves anything cheese. I can get him to eat dinosaur nuggets. He thinks they’re made of cheese inside and I’m not going to tell him the truth. Once in a blue moon, he will eat a hot dog, but he has to ask for it, I can’t offer. He is picky about his pizza too, only the totinos party pizzas will do, because any other kinds has “spicy sauce” even though some of them are more mild to me than the ones he likes. And yes, he only eats them with cheese.
Sylas is still as loving and affectionate as ever. He still gives his momma free kisses and hugs. He loves his brother and sister a lot – even if they don’t always get along. He drew a picture of Ivan at school and wrote ” I Wuv Ivan James” on it. How sweet is that! He still thinks Amalia is too cute – always telling me she looks cute. He is always thinking of others. When he gets a snack at the checkout lane at the store, he is always asking if he can get one for everyone else too. At school he gets points for being good in class. Once they get a certain number, he gets a prize from the treasure box. He has gotten Ivan and Amalia things from there before, spending his own points on his siblings.
This year has went by so fast. The last six years have gone by even faster. I hope that you always know how much I love you Sylas.
